About Succession Works
Liz Schurgin, CEO + Founder
Liz Schurgin is the founder of Succession Works, a consulting firm that supports nonprofits and associations with succession planning and navigating complex leadership transitions. Her work strengthens organizations during moments of change by helping them maintain mission continuity, preserve institutional knowledge, and build capacity for future growth.
Liz is a seasoned nonprofit leader and consultant with over 14 years of experience driving organizational growth and sustainability across the social sector. As the current Executive Director of the Greater DC Diaper Bank—one of the nation’s largest diaper distribution networks—Liz plays a central role in scaling critical services for low-income families throughout Maryland, Virginia and DC. She is the former award-winning Executive Director of the DC Youth Orchestra Program where co-founded the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative and the DC Arts Education Alliance. Previously, she was an Interim Director at the Goff Family Foundation.
Liz is on faculty at the University of Maryland where she teaches undergraduates and graduate students in nonprofit management, arts entrepreneurship, and leadership. She is also a Certified Association Executive through the American Society of Association Executives and serves on the board of directors for the Grammy-nominated Inscape Chamber Orchestra.
Liz graduated Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in music. She also holds a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music and is formerly a Sistema Fellow through the New England Conservatory. She lives in Maryland with her husband and two daughters.
